Research Interests

My research involves examining the relationship between local community information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives and the global Information Society. This interdisciplinary research draws on such concepts and theories as social inclusion/exclusion, social capital and social networks, social construction and social shaping of technology, political economy, diffusion of innovations, informational capitalism, and community ecology. In particular, I seek to better understand sociotechnical interaction network (STIN) dynamics, center-periphery tensions, omitted actors, and unintended consequences. The motivation for this line of research comes from my personal experience as a rural community technology "champion".
