Katy's
Quotes
2008: "Let us build 'Scholarly Marketplaces' that are as easy and fun to use as Flickr and YouTube. Instead of sharing photos and videos we will use them to share scientific datasets and algorithms." See recent talks.
2007: "We need insight instead of eye candy." See also Visualizing Network Dynamics Competition.
2006: "Global Brain: Human brains turn out to be rather
limited when compared to the flood of information they attempt to
process, manage, and use. There are diverse indicators that a 'global
brain' is emerging on this planet. While mostly available in biological
wetware today this global brain might very soon be dominated by
digital implants that help to effectively merge biological creativity
with digital resources and processing speed. Let's hope this global
brain is ready for action before we destroy our planet." See
also Wired Magazine, Feb. 06 and
Studying
the Emerging Global Brain.
2005:
"Today,
humanity's knowledge is stored in an exponentially increasing number
of papers, books, emails and in other formats. No man and no machine
can process this enormous amount of data and hence most of the knowledge
gets reinvented, is duplicated across sciences, or is simply lost
forever after a short period of time. However, to survive as a species,
we will need to preserve our planet or find means to sustain life
as we know it by other means. Besides achieving survival, we should
aim to enable all human beings to live a healthy, productive and
fulfilling life. Meeting these challenges requires the design of
cyberinfrastructures that provide access to humanity's collective
knowledge, data and tools and support the 'global brain' that is
emerging on this planet." See also Semantic
Association Networks.
