I am a Ph.D. student in the School
of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Indiana University. My research
interests are primarily focused on computer-mediated communication and the
information tools used to facilitate formal and informal learning in online
and face-to-face environments. I am also interested in the role the formation
of virtual communities plays in enhancing the educational experience. Recently,
I have started to explore the educational possibilities associated with video
games, simulations, and virtual worlds, such as Second Life. I am particularly
interested in the use of these environments for informal and peer-to-peer
learning, as well as the ways in which visitors to the spaces communicate
with each other. Gender issues associated with the use of technology by males
and females underlie these research agendas.

Service Activities
I organized the conference/workshop "Gender Equity in IT Education,"
funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The workshop/conference was
hosted by the ITWF project team and was held in September 2007. There were approximately
50 participants, and they included individuals from five Research I universities
- Buffalo, Illinois, Michigan, Washington, and Indiana - AP high school computer
science teachers, and others from organizations such as NSF and the National
Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT).
In addition to my work on the ITWF project, I was also a member of the (We)blog
Research on Genre Project (BROG) from 2005-Spring 2007. For the 2008-2009
academic year, I will be taking over the duties of the SLIS DSA webmaster. Also,
I will be the coordinator for the SLIS Friday Conversations. In 2005, I was
a volunteer researcher on the NSF-sponsored Quest Atlantis (QA) project (Principal
Investigators: Sasha Barab, Susan Herring, and Dan Hickey)
